After the launch of the new ConstructionSkills two-day Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS), the UK Construction Group (formerly MCG) reported in December of last year that the initiative has been a real success with an 800% increase in take up of delegates attending the programme.
Competency of workers has been a key priority and following a detailed analysis of existing practices, it was agreed that a common set of standards was necessary. The scheme was therefore designed to provide, in addition to specific health and safety issues, key methods of improving supervisory skills through:
- A breakdown of their responsibilities as supervisors
- Detail on the right skills to effectively supervise workers and activities
- Suggestions of solid intervention techniques and consideration of behavioural safety issues
Delegates provided positive feedback confirming that both the content and delivery of the national programme is either ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ in all areas. Experienced supervisors said that their outlook on health and safety had changed turning ‘an old head into a new one’. All had made positive changes to the way in which they addressed workers, behavioural issues and health and safety problems on site.
UKCG companies will continue to lead the drive to ensuring all supervisors achieve the SSP qualification by 2010 - raising level of supervisors’ competency across the whole of the industry. Those supervisors who have already undertaken at least a 2 day supervisory training course or achieved other accredited qualifications will be exempt until the renewal date or five years after the certification following which they will be required to renew the qualification, It is expected that if a worker holds a CSCS Gold card, he would be required to undertake a one day orientation course.
